The Serbian Ratno Vazduhoplovstvo i Protivvazduhoplovna Odbrana (Air Force and Air Defence - RV i PVO) will retain MiG-21 fighters in service until 2025 and buy Mi-35M attack and three Mi-17V5 transport helicopters by the end of the year, Brig Gen Zeljko Bilic, commander of the RV i PVO's 204th Air Force Brigade, told Serbian national TV station RTS1 on 2 August.
The RV i PVO's commander, Maj Gen Dusko Zarkovic, told the Politika newspaper on 27 July, "We still have some MiG-21 aircraft and also qualified and experienced pilots and technical personnel. We believe that at this point it would not be justified to 'administratively' remove this aircraft from operational use," adding, "further investments in the type are unprofitable".

In addition to the fact that Serbia will have 14 MiG-29 fighters at the beginning of 2021, which will be one of the mainstays of the Serbian air defense in the next decade, it has been decided that two NL-16s will return to the machine, for which there is still an experienced and capable staff, both in terms of pilots and in terms of technical composition.

Serbian MiG-21s were grounded since 2018. Last week MiG-21UM 185 took to the skies again. Two 'NL-16' aircraft are or will be wired to carry the R-60 missile so they can be used as QRA aircraft.
