It's the only way to compare two shots from two different (7D) camera's.. This unsharpness and ISO noise is just unacceptable (especially the first shot), whether it was edited or not doesn't matter. If it was my camera, I would ask my money back since my 40D takes much better pics at only half the price.

Chris didn't ask for tips on how to edit them and make them look a tiny bit better, or a tip to calibrate the camera since it was recalibrated by Canon only two weeks ago (or at least they say so). He asked whether someone could provide a full-res image taken with a 7D at ISO 250 to compare the ISO problems. So please could we get back to topic, as I would be interested to see other people's results at ISO values 200-400 as well..

With all due respect in your effort to help me, but do you want to pull my leg? Your picture does not help me at all because: resized, unsharp(?), backlighting, bad weather... Not possible to compare pictures, it could be everything. But it does not matter, as I said I will discuss this issue tomorrow with my shop.

Look, you cannot compare a edited/resized picture with the 100% view of another picture. Furthermore you should compare same conditions. I do not critize your picture, don't get me wrong. It just does not help me with my problem. It is like comparing a rainy day with a sunny day, this will never work. You can only compare equal conditions, so maybe you could show us a 7D picture at ISO 250 (motive does not matter) in sunny or at least normal day conditions without back light and other stuff.

don't take pic's at 250 iso at sunny day's,(because of the noise, never did it with my 10-D 20-D 40-D and 7-D)

always 100 iso...

let us know what the shop you bought the 7-D said.

I need the ISO rating 200-250 to reach a 1/1250 of a second with apertures 7.1 to 8.0. I assume you have a second sun in NL so you do not need the higher ISO.

Blue sky requires higher ISO settings than grey sky. Although it looks sunny the metering thinks the sky is darker so other settings. I always shoot ISO250-400 with blue skies. Haven't got any noise though with my 1D mkIII. Looking at the pics from the 7D's it's just ==censored== coming out of it... I'm thinking, is this the right camera for our hobby? Pherhaps Iwan can shine a light on it?

Hey Remco,
why up the ISO? (Roel never does),
why instead not go to manual white bal.? of quicker when doing action shots: up the 'overlight' dail.(slightly)?

Ja37 better lend a 2nd camera, make a comparing shot with each one, on ONE CFcard, using a tripod, and the same (type of) lens, same settings, (also check for in-body sharpning settings OFF-mode), same motiv, same light conditions. That will tell you a lot.
Using two 7Ds plus a third canon-body (not being a 7D) would up the chances. Guess perhaps at his shop they have 3 cams at hand and willing to test.

Here some examples that might help. Note; the images can be a little soft, because of the photobucket's way of handling them.

If there is a specific question about one of the pictures do not hesitate to ask.

One thing left, have you compared the images of your 7D with the of the 40D, bringing the image size back to 3888x2592 (the size of the 40D?) If so, are you still dissatisfied with the noise results?

@Schoonderwoerd: Thank you very much for your pictures and help, it is really appreciated! I assume you are using also 100-400 IS USM? Compared to mine your pictures look much better to be honest. I will try to find some equal shots to compare, but at the moment I am of the opinion that something has to be wrong with my 7D. Last question: Did you edit them except resizing? Sharpening?

Unfortunately I did not make it to the shop today. But I will keep you updated about the process.

to JA37;

The pictures posted were indeed shot with the 100-400 mm.

I don't know if your expectation of the 7D are too high or not (it is not for me to judge), but for me the visible noise in my pictures are acceptable for me (I rather have a picture with some noise and being sharp ---- see the enclosed picture with the fin on the back, reading do not paint----than otherwise), even being a 'pixelpeeper'.

Allthough it might not be the solution you are looking for, I've found out that different picturestyles can generate different noiselevels. If you shoot raw, I suggest you take one of your raw shots and open it in DPP. Go to the picturesstyles and play with them. Using the landscapestyle it will give you the most noise, using neutral gives you less noise. This is usual the case with more dark (blue) parts of the picture. Give it a try.

Enclosed another example taken with the 100-400 mm, iso 250, standard picture style, dpp sharpening 5 (less sharpening is also less noise).

Hope this will give you some additional help.

JA37, sharpness seems to be good. I don't know what's wrong but this is not a DSLR standard noise amount. Especially not with a new generation. There's also quiet a difference with E. Schoonderwoerd's 7D.
