Re: Japan Airshows 2019
Trying to plan a trip around the Dec 1st Hyakuri Air Show. Is it normal practice for the military to not fly the day after the air shows?
Would like to get 2 days of F 4 photos before they're retired. Just wondering if showing up for the air show is worth it versus showing up later in the week when the base would be more active for 2 days of photos.
Thanks for anyone who can help me here.

My 2 cents: go to the show. It will be hard to get in, there will be traffic jams etc.
But during the show, they'll use afterburner and pull G. Weekday flying at Hyakuri has been slowing down for years. During the show and the show practice, they'll really put an F-4 through its paces.
If I were you, I'd go to the final practice on the 29th of November. No guarantee that that will take place, but I was glad I went in 2018. Then the show on the 1st of December.
Well, if I were really you , I'd make it 3 days and go to see the invited audience only show on the saturday from the outside as well.
In 2018, the friday practice did not have the F-4 flying display. But the white and the black specials from 302 Sqn taxied. I could not make it to the show and that friday was my final chance to see the white Phantom which had evaded me until then. I had been unaware of the existence of the black one until it was pulled out of the hangar.
I had seen the F-4 practice flying display about 10 days before the show but that was perfomed with other F-4's.
The friday practice did have the F-15 display, including several 360° turns in full afterburner.
Wishing you all the luck, whatever you decide to do.
Cheers, Buysse 2.
Re: Japan Airshows 2019
Hi,
I'd like to clarify: there were Phantoms flying on that friday before the show, both fighter and recce versions. But the special paints from 302 squadron did not fly, nor were the fabulous individual F-4 practice displays of about 10 days earlier repeated.
Cheers, Buysse 2.

Trevor,

It isn’t a hard rule for bases to have a day or two hiatus after a show, but I would recommend planning to visit the base on other days.
> wondering if showing up for the air show is worth it
It is. The show on the Sunday is the only easy way to get a mid-field, up-sun position for morning flying.
Assuming the sun is out – for the last two shows it hasn’t been.
> versus showing up later in the week
It depends on whether you are interested in pattern work (landings and take-offs) or aerobatics.
If you visit in the week(s) before the show, there is a chance you will get aerobatic rehearsals.
If you visit after the show, it is less likely.
Depending on whether they are planning to send a display to the show at Nyutabaru. Being 301’s long time home, and the base where all F-4 crews trained, that is a possibility.
But that would be one display to rehearse; for the Hyakuri show, I would expect several (opening formation flypast, 501 & 301, and hopefully a second 301 display). And I would expect each of them to rehearse in the week before the show. As well as on the dress rehearsal / family day on the Saturday.
Beyond that, I will second Buysse 2’s comments. I was surprised by the lack of flying on the pre-show Friday in 2018: Aside from the runway runs by the 302 hikotai specials - 301 and 501 both did one multi-ship launch, the Komatsu F-15s arrived and one rehearsed, but the afternoon was mostly dead until some evening arrivals for the static. So this year I am planning to visit Hyakuri on the Monday and Tuesday, and spend the rest of the week in the Tokyo area before returning for Saturday and Sunday.
Hope this helps,
Jonathan.

Re: Japan Airshows 2019
I've got some PMs asking (almost) the same questions.
I'll answer them here.
Q1: We are intending to go to Iruma on Friday 1st November.
Are we likely to see arrivals and rehearsals as well as operational flights on this day?
Or will arrivals all come on Saturday for the airshow on Sunday?
A1: You will be able to see the arrivals, rehearsals and normal operations on 1 Nov..
On 2 Nov., there will be the Blue Impulse rehearsal.
Somtimes they'll have some other rehearsals.
Q2: We are also going to shimofusa air show.
Do you know if any aircraft depart after the show and if we can park our car near the airbase and
walk it to the gate?
A2: Almost all aircrafts will return to their home on the show day. Usually TC-90 and T-5
will remain the base(Because they fly low speed, so diffcult to return in the daytime).
There are some narrow-roads around the base. I think you can park your cars at there.
Q3: Would you know in advance any participants for Iruma and Shimofusa?
A3: Usually;
Iruma: C-1, C-2, C-130H, F-4EJkai, F-2, F-15, T-4, T-7, T-400, U-4, U-125, CH-47J
UH-1J, AH-1S. Rare to see JMSDF aircrafts. No US-aircrafts.
Shimofusa: P-3C, P-1, SH-60K, U-36A, T-5, TC-90, C-1 or C-130H(JASDF), CH-47J(JGSDF),
UH-1J. Rare to see US-2 and M/CH-101.
Q4: If there are going to be any joint exercises at any air bases towards the end of the month?
A4: I have no infos. by now.
