I spend about 2 hours at Nellis last week.
In total I saw 5 F-22.s, 4 F-15,s and about 6 returning Thunderbirds.
Here are some pictures.
Unfortunately they are not as crisp as I would have liked, this is because I am still figuring out the settings from my new camera (70D) out.
Still hope you will like them.

Thanks for your replay. Is there any chance to get closer to the landing aircraft at Nellis or is this the best place to photograph the aircraft from out side the fence? I use a 420 mm max but on a full frame camera it looks a little to far for my range.

For proper pictures near the racetrack you need at least 400+ mm on a DX camera. An F-15 is ok with 400 depending on the way they turn in.

Hi Ralph, for you the best spot would be number 5 on the Nellis airfield guide.
Which is at Cheyenne Blvd, I like this spot better then the Speedway.
At Cheyenne they come in very low.

You can also make some nice take off and landing pictures near the Speedway on Las Vegas Blvd. When the aircraft depart from rwy 03 and ask for a 'flex departure' drive to point 1 or even a bit further up north so you can photograph the jets in a left hand turn with approximately 400mm. When the aircraft return you can photograph the landing jets when they land at rwy21R (21L is probably to far and from spot 2 you can only photograph the bigger planes). You'll have to follow the jets visually at the end of downwind and baseleg to know of you have to walk (sometimes run) back or forth to photograph 'em at the end of their baseleg to final turn with at least 400mm. You will learn what's the best tactic after a few jets and light is the best after 2 p.m. Don't get to frustrated you will miss some who will land at 21L or turn to soon (some of the homeboys will make such a thight turn towards final sometimes it will be impossible to make a decent pic from), you can't have 'em all but the ones you will bag you will appreciate more!
