Tango scramble - Air to air over Bulgaria
Two weeks ago I had the unique chance to be on board of Bulgarian AF C-27J during an epic flight over southern Bulgaria.
The flight was part of the first joint training of Bulgarian and Polish Air Forces which took place in Graf Ignatievo air base between 28th September and 7th October. The participants were Bulgarian MiG-29 and MiG-21 fighters and four Polish MiG-29's from 1.elt (1st Tactical Squadron) which is stationed in 23rd air base Minsk Mazowiecki.
During the last day of the exercise a Tango scramble sortie was fulfilled. The QRA pair of MiG-21's flew to intercept the Bulgarian AF C-27J Spartan plane which plays the intruder's role. The Cold War veterans were armed with two R-60 (AA-8 'Aphid') air to air missiles.
After the 21's two Bulgarian and two Polish MiG-29's escorted the C-27J.
At the end of the flight two Su-25K attack aircraft also stood behind the Spartan. They were armed with four unguided rockets pads and two training missiles R-60.

That first photo is a bit puzzling...
But indeed, "best flying subjects of the year"! Especially the now seldom-seen Mig-21s and Sukhoi Su-25 Frogfeet...

Re: Tango scramble - Air to air over Bulgaria
Incredible! I'd say you can stop photographing fighter aircraft now, it can't get any better then this!
Cheers,
