Japan 2009 07/28-08/27 Report (NRT, HND, KIX, ITM, OKO, ...)

Hi all,

got back from my annual trip to Japan, so I am posting the report here.

In the morning of 28th July, my father drove me to Budapest, where I was supposed to take a Helvetic F100 flight to Zurich, but not before logging a couple

of frames. Didn't log a lot of them, but still I got 6 new ones, highlight being the Kras Air 762. I did spot airside from the connecting passage between T2A

and T2B, which offers some windows with view of the hangar area and the runway.

After the hour and a half long flight, we landed at ZRH, where I only had 1:30 for the transit, however I did have time to make a couple of frames and

scrapes after I moved to the midfield terminal. Spotting is done there easily, since it is a glass structure and you have good view of one of the runways

plus some taxiways there. In about 45 minutes, I was able to log the following. Not bad result getting another 6 new frames and 2 scrapes in that short time.

The movements were all common, but was glad to log my first Swiss A333, HB-JHB.

The 12 hour long flight to Tokyo was operated by Swiss A343 HB-JMF and soon we were landing at NRT, at around 8AM. After quickly passing through immigration

and customs and calling my parents and grandparents, that I've arrived, I did spot for a couple of hours before taking the bus to Saitama, where my

grandparents live. Out of the 44 logged aircraft, 24 were new for me, again quite a good score. The highlight, but at the same time a bit of a disappointment

was the Vladivostok Avia A320, since I was expecting it to be a Tu204.

After two days spent without aviation, I got the need to log some frames again, so I went to a museum nearby my grandparents' house. Mostly military stuff,

but a little civil as there. The main reason to go there was the YS-11 of ANK preserved there.

The next couple of days was spent doing some non-aviation stuff, and then I decided to visit another place close to the place of my stay, the Iruma Air Base.

The main reason of the visit were the active YS-11s of JASDF as well as the business-jets of JASDF. Was quite surprised about how busy the base was and was

satisfied by the number of the aircraft I came here to see (4 YS-11s and 3 bizjets). Finally, I wasn't disappointed about the number of C-1s either, since I

like transporters and the C-130 was a nice bonus. Here is what I got.

The next day, I visited another aviation museum, in Kakamigahara, near Gifu Air Base. Again, mostly military stuff, but as with Tokorozawa, the main reason

After zero pure civil spotting, I had the urge to visit some busy civil airport again, and so the airport of my choice was Tokyo Narita with the intention of

doing some night photography there. Because of that fact, I left home in the afternoon, so this log is what I got in 4 or 5 hours rather than during whole

day. Made only 20 out of over 60 logged, but it was compensated by the nightshots I got. The highlight was the Vladivostok Avia again, but this time finally

with the Tu204.

Since I really enjoyed the nightshooting the previous day, I decided to do it again the next day, this time leaving home even later, arriving just before

sunset. Again logged only a couple of frames, but still got 13 frames and 1 scrape.

The next evening I left Saitama for Sapporo, where an airshow was about to be held at the Chitose Airbase. I spent a couple of hours in the morning there and

in the afternoon, after photographing the static, I moved over to the civil side to get some more JA registrations. Firstly here is the log of the airshow.

Was glad to bag another YS-11.

I stayed till around 6PM at the civil side and here is what I logged. Only 14 new frames, but I got another active YS-11, this time even with civil reg. The

N-regged bizjet was also a nice bonus to mix up the regular traffic.

After returning from Hokkaido, I needed a little rest, so another visit to an airport was not before the 13th. I decided to visit NRT again, this time in the

morning and then transfer to HND to spend an hour there before going to Tokyo to do some non-aviation stuff.

The visit to NRT was quite successful with 32 new frames made, including a new 747SP for me, EP-IAA and the Sky Team colored AM 767 XA-JBC.

The transfer to HND took about two hours. At HND I spotted from the observation deck on top of the ANA terminal. Got 14 new frames, 13 JA ones and 1 VP

regged bizjet. The highlight was another YS-11, which was parked in the hangar and logged from the monorail back to Tokyo.

Another visit to an airport came soon, taking an early morning shinkansen from Tokyo to Osaka. First airport on the list was Kansai Airport, where I stayed

till the afternoon. Spotting at KIX is easy from the observation building, to which you can get by a shuttle bus that costs 100JPY. On the day I was there,

they even held some concert on the terrace, so there was a really good atmosphere and I really enjoyed the day there.

I got over 30 frames, which is more than enough for a half-day. Highlights for me were the Cebu Pacific A319, Air Macau A321 and my first 767 with winglets,

and ANZ one - ZK-NCG.

The next day was dedicated solely to getting JA frames, and so after a night at an internet caffee (I love the Japanese ones, where you have shower, free

drinks and a small private compartment with a mat the size of a single bed), I took a train to Sone station, where I rented a bike (just 300JPY/day). I

cycled to the airport, first stopping below the approach path and then going on to the Itami SkyPark, which is an excellent place with all the ammenities, as

snack shop, vending machines and toilets. There is even a screen showing the arrivals and departures. It is about 3km long and runs parallel to the runway.

Bagged over 25 JA frames, which was a nice score considering it was my 4th visit to Japan since I started spotting.

After another night in the same internet caffee, I took the Hikari RailStar to Fukuoka in the morning. The airport is situated just 10 minutes by subway from

the main train station. At Fukuoka I spent only a couple of hours and in the early afternoon I took the Shinkansen back to Tokyo. Still I managed to get a

couple of new frames in that time. Bagged only 13, but among them was my first J-Air EMB-170 and another 3 non-Japense Asian narrowbodies, so was rather

satisfied.

The Yokota Festival was also held on the next day, the 23rd, however there was also an airshow at Matsushima, so the choice was clear. Not so many aircraft as at the Chitose Airshow, but still worht the 2 hour shinkansen ride.

Unfortunately, the day of my departure came soon, and so I found myself on Narita Express in the morning. I arrived about two hours before the departure, but due to long queues at check-in, security and immigrations, I arrived airside quite late, and I also had to buy some presents, so I only logged 6 frames, but only made one of them.

After the uneventful flight on HB-JMJ, we arrived in zurich, where I had 1:30 to make the transit. In that short time, I made 19 new frames, which was more than enough before boarding the last flight of the day and the trip. The highlight was my first Air Seychelles B767.

In conclusion, the trip, although not a pure spotting trip was excellent and Japan again fullfilled my expectations. The country provides excellent spotting oppurtunities, as well as photo locations and the variety of traffic at various japanese airports is also excellent. I also recommend you getting the Japan Rail Pass if you go to Japan. If I didn't have one, I would have visited a lot less airports. Unfortunately, this time, I wasn't able to visit Nagoya, due to the earthquake that occured on the day I wanted to go there, but since I am planning to move to Japan to study at university there in about a year, it was not that big problem, since hopefully I'll have a lot of spotting oppurtunities in Japan from the next year.

of course, every aircraft I listed here was present at the lcoation. The NOT IN MY DB just means, that it is not in ADU, the database I use. So yes, they are present at the location
