Airbus reveals plans for an A330MRTT+
During the recent Farnborough International Airshow Airbus announced that it plans to launch a major upgraded version of its popular A330MRTT Multi Role Tanker Transport. This new version, referred to as A330MRTT+, will be based on an A330neo airframe. The MRTT+ is expected to be some 8% more fuel-efficient than the ‘classic’ A330MRTT.
The increased fuel efficiency of the MRTT+ could either provide an extended range or an increase in its refueling capacity.
A decision to go ahead with the development of a tanker version of the successful A330neo airliner is expected before the end of this year. The company is already undertaking risk reduction efforts to turn the A330-800, which features Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines and an enhanced wing, into a tanker.
The idea to develop an upgraded version of the A330MRTT comes in time for a possible major order from the US. Within the near future, the USAF needs to replace a large contingent of its KC-135R Stratotankers. Airbus could potentially sell some 100 A330MRTT+ to the USAF for which it will have to team up with a US aircraft manufacturer.
