Algeria's interest in the AW249
In 2022, Algeria expressed interest in the Leonardo AW249 Fenice attack helicopter. Unconfirmed reports suggest the North African country plans to acquire seven AW249s for the Force Aérienne Algérienne (Algerian Air Force).
The AW249 was developed as a replacement for the Agusta A129 Mangusta following a contract from the Italian Army. It is larger, more survivable, and offers greater autonomy than its predecessor. The helicopter features advanced stealth technologies and integrated mission systems capable of controlling Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS).
Once acquired, the AW249 is expected to replace the aging fleet of Mil Mi-24 MkIII Hind attack helicopters, approximately 30 of which remain operational.
Additionally, the AW249 Fenice, also known as the Nuovo Elicottero da Esplorazione e Scorta (New Scouting and Escort Helicopter), would complement the Mi-28NE two-seat anti-armor attack helicopters during air combat missions.
This interest aligns with Algeria's strategy of investing in high-tech military equipment to bolster its regional defence capabilities. While specific negotiations for the AW249 have not been confirmed, Algeria's history of acquisitions from Leonardo and its emphasis on modernising its attack and utility helicopter fleets make the AW249 a strong contender for future procurement.
