On 2 February 2021, the Koninklijke Luchtmacht (KLu, Royal Netherlands Air Force) tested the brand-new arresting cable of Gilze Rijen air base (the Netherlands).
The KLu used F-16AM J-628 of 322sq (originating from Leeuwarden air base) for the tests.
From 4 February 2021, after a maintenance period, the main runway of Gilze Rijen is reopend again. The base hosts the Defensie Helikopter Commando (DHC, Defence Helicopter Command) with CH-47D/F Chinooks (298sq), AS532UL Cougars (300sq) and AH-64D Apaches (301sq) as well as the Koninklijke Luchtmacht Historical Flight.
The base is used as an alternate for fighter operations, so the arresting cable is a necessary tool in case of emergencies.
