USA USAF A 10 Mighty 25 AMBUSH 11 640Assam Draggins deployed to Japan

On 21 May 2021, a dozen 25th Fighter Squadron A-10C Thunderbolt IIs arrived at Yokota Air Base (Japan). After a two-hour flight, with the two characteristic large fuel tanks under the fuselage attached, the Thunderbolt IIs touched down at Yokota's runway. Normally based in South Korea, the 25th Fighter Squadron Assam Draggins flew directly from Osan Air Base to Yokota (Japan).

The following 25th Fighter Squadron/51st Fighter Wing OS coded A-10Cs are deployed to Yokota:

78-0651 (as 51OG flagship), 78-0652, 78-0716, 79-0092, 79-0159, 79-0201, 79-0211, 80-0153, 80-0167 (as 7AF flagship), 80-0245, 81-0973 and 81-0979

During the Vietnam War, the 25th Tactical Fighter Squadron was assigned to the 8th Tactival Fighter Wing and operated the F-4 Phantom II fighter aircraft from Ubon Royal Thai Air Force Base (Thailand). When the USAF started to withdraw from Thailand, the 25th TFS was reassigned to the 18th Tactical Fighter Wing at Kadena Air Base, Okinawa (Japan), where it remained until 1 February 1981.


The unit was relocated to Suwon Air Base (South Korea) on 25 February 1981 without personnel or equipment and assigned to the 51st Composite Wing. In January 1982, the unit received their first Thunderbolt IIs. On 1 July 1990, the 25th TFS was inactivated and the aircraft were returned to the US. On 1 October 1993, the 25th Fighter Squadron was reactivated under the 51st Wing at Osan Air Base (South Korea).
