On 11 January 2022, a Dae Han Min Guk Gong Gun (RoKAF, Republic of Korea Air Force) Northrop KF-5E Tiger II crashed around 13:40 hrs LT, into a mountain in Hwaseong, some forty kilometres south of Seoul. The pilot did try to eject, but unfortunately did not survive the accident.
The Tiger II, operated by the 10th Fighter Wing, had just taken off from Suwon air base, when an engine fire warning light turned on.
The RoKAF operates the KF-5E/F and F-5E/F with two fighter wings, the 10th FW controlling the 101st and 201st Fighter Squadron, both KF-5E/F, at Suwon air base and the 18th FW controlling the 105th and 112th Fighter Squadron, both F-5E/F and KF-5F, at Gangneung.
