First Ghostrider arrives at Cannon
On 19 July 2021, the first AC-130J Ghostrider gunship arrived at Cannon AFB (NM) to be inducted with Air Force Special Operations Command's (AFSOC's) 27th Special Operations Wing.
Accompanied by a 4th Special Operations Squadron AC-130J from Hurlburt Field (FL), Cannon's first AC-130J arrived together on the flightline. Although no squadron has been named yet, the Ghostriders will be first subordinated to Cannon's 27th Special Operations Group Detachment 2.
At this moment it is unknown to Scramble if the 16th Special Operations Squadron, which currentlty operates the AC-130W Stinger II out of Cannon, will transform into a Ghostrider unit. It is expected that the AC-130W will be phased out in due time.
The 27th Special Operations Group, part of the 27th Special Operations Wing located at Cannon, is a group that accomplishes global special operations taskings as an Air Force component member of AFSOC.
Earlier Scramble Magazine wrote about Ghostrider's initial combat mission over Afghanistan and the AC-130J Ghostrider Formal Training Unit (FTU), that will be erected at Kirtland AFB (NM).
