Ghana’s L-39NG procurement in a stall
In August 2021, the Ghana Ministry of Defence (MoD) sought parliamentary budget approval for acquiring six Aero L-39NG training and light combat aircraft including spares, training, and support valued at € 111 million.
In January 2022, Ghana paused negotiations for the L-39NGs whilst bids from the US for the A-29 Super Tucano and the AT-6C Wolverine were considered. The US bids were not accepted and approval has still not been obtained for the L-39NG funding a year later, and Ghana is in a financial crisis at this moment.
The L-39NG procurement may be on the same heading as Senegal’s which in April 2018 announced that it would be procuring four L-39NGs, but by early 2022 the whole deal had been cancelled.
Ghana currently operates four Hongdu K-8 intermediate jet trainers.
