Gripen production for Brazil taken up

On 9 May 2023, president Lula da Silva inaugurated the Gripen assembly line in Gavião Peixoto. There the fuselage sections from Sweden and Brazil will be mated for the fifteen that are to be assembled locally. This number was originally planned to be 23.

Like many aircraft types in the Brazilian Forces, the Gripen has received its own local designation. It is known as the F-39.

The first dual is now under construction at Saab in Sweden whereas the forward fuselage sections of the single seaters are under construction at São Bernardo do Campo in São Paulo state in the joint Saab-Embraer factory there.

These are the planned serials for the 36 Gripens:

F-39E 4100 to 4127 [28]
F-39F 4000 to 4007 [8]
