Guyana commissions two HAL 228 aircraft
Following their purchase and delivery on 31 March 2024, the Guyana Defence Force has taken two HAL 228 aircraft on strength on 17 November 2024.
The aircraft will serve with the Air Corps, with its main base at Air Station London, Tehmeri.
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) holds a license for production of the Dornier 228 and is responsible for the production of the airframes, including those that were to be marketed by Dornier.
The two aircraft for Guyana were entirely produced and marketed by HAL in a direct sale to Guyana.
The aircraft were ordered early last year, in January 2023. The versatile 228s are a welcome addition to the cash strapped GDF Air Corps and can be used for maritime patrol and transport duties to protect Guyanese interests, which have significantly increased since the fairly recent discovery of huge oil fields off Guyana’s coast. Exploration of these gives an unprecedented boost to Guyana’s economy.
Both aircraft have received Guyanese registrations, 8R-ETR and 8R-JAG, which were unveiled during the commissioning ceremony at Air Station London.
