HMX-1 VH-92A testflights in South Carolina
On Monday 22 March 2021, a detachment of two Sikorsky VH-92A from Marine Helicopter Squadron (HMX) 1 were deployed to Joint Base Charleston (SC) to conduct testing. The two VH-92As were joined by an unknown number of MV-22B Ospreys from the same unit.
One of the test flights of the presidential replacement helicopter took place on Summerall Field at The Citadel in Charleston (SC). A nice video of this event was published.
The VH-92A was selected in 2014 to replace the VH-3D and VH-60N helicopters. So far twelve VH-92As are ordered (six in 2019 and six in February 2020). HMX-1 will get 23 VH-92As, comprised of 21 operational fleet aircraft and two test aircraft.
The presidential helicopter fleet is operated by HMX-1, based at Marine Corps Air Facility (MCAF) Quantico (VA), with a detachment at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling in Washington D.C. (MD).
The US Navy unit Air Test and Evaluation Squadron (HX) 21 Blackjack, based at NAS Patuxent River (MD) is involved in all testing. Overview of HMX-1/HX-21 VH-92As known so far.
