In April 2021, a Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) AH-64DJP Apache was noted with unit code a IBH. This former IIIATH coded helicopter was previously operated by the Metabaru based 3rd Anti-Tank Helicopter Corps (3 Taisensha Herikoputatai). This unit had two Hikotais, one operating the AH-1S Cobra and the other one the AH-64DJP Apache.
A tweet in May 2021 confirmed the name change of at least part of the unit, it was reflagged as the 1st Combat Helicopter Corps (1 Sento Herikoputatai) and is also based at Metabaru.
Possibly it only concerns the Hikotai operating the Apache, however with the dwindling numbers of operational Cobras, it could well be the whole unit is renamed, with the remaining Cobras being distributed between the other four Anti-Tank units. At the moment three Apaches have been noted with the new unit: 74503, 74509 and 74513.
The future for Japanese Anti-Tank or Combat helicopter operations is unclear. The acquisition of new AH-64DJPs was halted after number thirteen was delivered, because of budget constraints. Also the plan to manufacture an armed version of the OH-1 Ninja seems to have been abandoned. No budget has been requested for a new AH-X so Japan has to make do with its remaining Cobras and its fleet of twelve Apaches. At least the OH-1s and AH-64DJPs are slowly becoming available again after both types were grounded after accidents.
