Malaysian CN235MPA upgrades in full swing
On 7 October 2022, the Tentera Udara Diraja Malaysia (TUDM, Royal Malaysian Air Force) has taken delivery of its second, out of three, converted Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPA).
The MPA, a converted CN235-220M with serial M44-05 (c/n 038N), is the second converted CN235 delivered. The first one, serial M44-03 (c/n 036N) was converted and delivered by PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI) last June. The aircraft are referred to as CN235-220MSA. According to the information, the MPAs are supposedly based at Kuching, Sarawak.
The CN235MSA aircraft are part of the Maritime Security Initiative (MSI) programme, with the final aircraft to be delivered by end 2022. This programme is an initiative between the US and Malaysia to improve the capabilities and interoperability of the two parties.
In October 2022, the Malaysian government has made a decision about the procurement of their next maritime patrol aircraft (MPA) and UAS (Unmanned Aerial System). Leonardo was awarded the MPA tender based on the ATR72MP, which is designated P-72 in Italian service. The award is for two aircraft with a further option for four more.
