Michigan: Thunderbolt IIs and Stratotankers out - Pegasus in

At the beginning of January 2024, the Department of the Air Force (DAF) selected Selfridge Air National Guard Base (MI), as the preferred location to host the next Boeing KC-46A Pegasus unit.

Pending the outcome of a planned environmental impact analysis in 2025, it is expected that a dozen KC-46As will replace the aging A-10C 107th Fighter Squadron "Red Devils" Thunderbolt IIs and 171st Air Refueling Squadron "Michigan six pack" KC-135R/T Stratotankers at Selfridge.

The twenty MI coded Thunderbolts at Selfridge are expected to begin divestment in 2026, and the eight KC-135R/Ts there are expected to begin divestment in 2027.

If everything will work out as planned, Selfridge will receive twelve new KC-46As that are projected to start arriving in 2029 and will bring enhanced capabilities. Those capabilities will include multi-point air refueling capability (boom and drogue refueling on the same sortie) and also carrying simultaneously cargo on the entire main deck floor.
