Since late October 2024, various media report that president Lula of Brazil will discuss military cooperation with the Italian prime-minister Meloni during the G20 summit, 18-19 November in Rio de Janeiro.
One of the projects is the possible acquisition of the M346 advanced trainer/light attack aircraft to replace the A-1 (AMX) of the Força Aérea Brasileira (FAB, Brazilian Air Force) that will be phased out in 2024. Also, the Marinha (Navy) is eyeing the type to supersede the AF-1 (A-4 Skyhawk). Although a handful have been upgraded, the type is getting long in the tooth.
Up to thirty is the number of aircraft mentioned, with 24 to go to the FAB and six in first instance to the Navy.
Strangely, the acquisition of a successor to the AMX is not in the 2024-2033 strategic plan of the Ministry of Defence's aeronautical command.
Given the types to be replaced, the M346 would likely be the light attack version. Be aware that this could also be 'news' to nudge Brazil to such an option ...
