Slovenia is about to order one Leonardo C-27J Spartan transport aircraft for its armed forces through a government to government deal. The C-27J would make Slovenia independent in providing air transport for its own needs.
According to the White Book of Defence plan from 2019, it is planned to reduce the number of types of aircraft in the air force. This might mark the end of the LET L-410UVP-E aircraft within the Slovenian armed forces.
The procurement process will continue as soon as the Constitutional Court releases the law on the provision of funds for investments in the Slovenian Armed Forces until 2026. In November 2020, the Slovenian Parliament already adopted the Law on the Distribution of Funds for Investing in the Slovenian armed forces for the period 2021-2026 to provide an additional 300 million euros for the next six years. A total of 780 million euros will be spend for modernization of combat vehicles, logistics and medical equipment, air defense systems, communication and infantry weapons, infrastructure, equipment for soldiers, but also includes 128 million euros for military aviation.
Next to the C-27J, Slovenia intends to buy two transport helicopters, most likely Airbus Cougar (Super Puma) helicopters of which four are already in use.
