On 27 November 2024, Türkiye’s Defence Minister Yasar Güler officially announced a reduction in the scope of the country's F-16 Acquisition and Modernisation programme.
Originally, the programme included the acquisition of 32 newly built F-16C Block 70 and 8 F-16D Block 70 aircraft, along with upgrade kits for 79 existing F-16C/D models. However, the upgrade portion has been omitted, as Türkiye plans to handle the modernisation domestically through Turkish Aerospace Industries (TUSAS) facilities.
According to Güler, acquiring the new Block 70 F-16s will cost USD 7,0 billion, compared to the original overall programme value of USD 23,0 billion.
Güler also emphasized Türkiye’s interest in rejoining the F-35A programme, from which it was expelled in 2019.
In parallel, Türkiye is pursuing two other fighter aircraft initiatives. The first is the development of its indigenous fifth-generation fighter jet, the TAI TF Kaan National Combat Aircraft (MMU - Milli Muharip Uçak). The second is the potential acquisition of Eurofighter Typhoons. Germany, after initially opposing the sale, has now instructed its sales authority to proceed with discussions on the matter.
