Austria M 346FA fighter attack aircraft 640Twelve M346FA Masters for Austria

Four years after retiring the Saab J105Ö fleet, the Österreichische Luftstreitkräfte (Austrian Air Force) has decided to purchase the M346 Fighter Attack (M346FA) model from the Italian manufacturer Leonardo.

On 28 December 2024, Austrian Defence Minister Klaudia Tanner announced that Austria will acquire twelve M346FA Master twin-engine transonic advanced jet trainers and light combat aircraft. The purchase will be made in collaboration with Italy under a 'government-to-government' (G2G) agreement.

The Ministry of Defence is following the recommendation of the Bundesheer General Staff. Funding for the purchase was already included in the 2022 multi-year financial framework and the "ÖBH 2032+" development plan.

Negotiations are currently underway with the Italian government. A key aspect of the discussions includes industrial cooperation to involve Austrian businesses, bringing added value to the economy and strengthening domestic industry.

Defence Minister Klaudia Tanner stated: "By purchasing these jets, we are addressing a significant capability gap in our air force. This enables us to bring 100 percent of pilot training back to Austria while significantly enhancing air defence. It strengthens the protection of Austria, its population, and our neutrality against aerial threats."

The new aircraft will be stationed at Hörsching Air Base near Linz. The M346FA Master is a two-seater, weapons-capable subsonic jet. It will be used for pilot training, supporting land forces, and air defence operations.

On 31 August 2024, Scramble Magazine first reported that Austria considered an offer to purchase new M346 Advanced Jet Trainers (AJT).
