Update Central African Gazelle crash
In addition to our news item of 8 March 2021, we have more information on the incident and that two helicopters were involved of which one crashed.
When we investigated some YouTube video footage related to the incident, a SOKO built Gazelle painted in an overall light blue colour scheme, was shown.
The Gazelle was identified through a shot of the instrument panel showing RA-05710 and construction number 055. This helicopter was once operated by the Yugoslav Air Force with serial 12672.
On the rear fuselage was a white sticker marked TL-WJU and a roundel of the Force Aérienne Centrafricaine (FAC, Central African Republic Air Force). Despite the roundel we suspect the helicopter is not operated by the FAC, as their aircraft and helicopters are normally registered in the TL-Kxx range.
We therefore think the Gazelle is most likely part of a fleet of helicopters operated by Private Military Companies (PMC) that operate throughout the African continent.
The unidentified Gazelle that crashed on 27 February 2021 is also a SOKO SA341G Gazelle. This helicopter was en-route to pick up some Russian mercenaries of the Wagner Group after they had suffered injuries, but crashed on the way towards the pickup point. The identity is reported as RA-05702 (c/n 058).
