On Friday 18 October 2024, Royal Air Force Wedgetail AEW1 with serial WT001 rolled out freshly painted of the hangar at Southend Airport. The aircraft returned to STS Aviation Services at Birmingham for further modification.
The aircraft is adorned with full VIII (8) Squadron markings and the serial is painted on the forward and aft fuselage. The squadron badge shows a sheathed Arabian dagger known as a jambiya, adopted in recognition of the unit's long association with Arabia.
The unit was relocated to RAF Lossiemouth, from RAF Waddington after the retirement of the Sentry AEW1 in 2021. The squadron falls under the NATO Airborne Early Warning and Control Component and work alongside NATO’s E-3A Sentry AEW&C aircraft.
Delivery to RAF Lossiemouth is still reported as 2024.
