General

This is Canberra's International airport. It used to be a military airbase known as RAAF Fairbairn and it is still referred to that way. However, the military now 'just' rent hanagr space here.

Layout

The civil activity occupies the western side with the general aviation on the north side. The east side is occupied by the military.

Getting There

The airfield is situated on the eastern outskirts of Canberra. It is signposted and close to the ALT23 highway.

Around the Airport

1RAAF Fairbarn ramp

First spot is the road underpassing the runway 30 threshold and heading to the gate of RAAF Fairbarn. From this road, Glenora Drive, the RAAF ramp can be seen. Also, there is a possibility to look into some of the hangars. To this end, enter the nearby parking lot.

2Runway 30 approach

Just before you reach th threshold of runway 30, there is a drag race track to the right. From there, you should do okat for aircraft landing at 30.

3Runway 35 approach - morning

Back on the main road along the airfield, Pialligo Avenue, and just east of the entrance to Glenora Road, there is a dirt track running south. From here you will be able to spot the aircraft landing on runway 35 in the morning. They will be a bit high though.

4Runway 35 approach - afternoon

After midday you will have to move further west, just north of the aforementioned Pialligo Avenue.

5Runway 35 taxiway and threshold - afternoon

The next spot is at the southernomst tip of the airfield terrain itself. Go past the industrial estates and parking lots and up to the perimeter fence. This will give you views of the holding point for runway 35.

6Runway 35 taxiway and exit - afternoon

The airside car parks provide some opportunity to watch the aircraft on the taxi track along runway 35, although there is a barrier.

7Terminal area

No clues about the best spot here, but it must be possible to see the ramp when standing next to the terminal on the north side.

8General aviation area

Northwest of the general aviation area there are some roads and parking lots. From these you can look onto the GA ramps. On the ramp itself, some former Polish Iskras are stored.

9Runway 12 approach

From the northenmost road in the GA area, you can watch the aircraft landing at runway 12.

10New terminal parking lot, runway 17 - afternoon

The large parking lots of this new airport building should provide an afternnon view of runway 17 halfway point and RAAF Fairbarn on the opposite side.

11Runway 17 approach

Just north of the perimter fence there is a dirt track into the waste land (which might be off limits now?). From there you can pick a spot p.m. or a.m. to spot in runway 17's approach.
