General

RAAF Edinburgh is a military airfield situated north of Adelaide.

Layout

The base is part of an exstensive military terrain. The ramp is well inside the base, bordered to the west by the main runway 18/36 and unpaved runway 04/11. The east side holds buildings and the DSTO facility, there is a road in between though.

Getting There

From Adelaide, take the A20 northbound. You will pass Parafield airport along the way. This will bring you to the east of the air base, take the Winterslow Road exit.

Alternatively, take the A1 Port Wakefield Road from Adelaide. This will take you to the west side of the airfield. Exit the A1 at Waterloo Corner Road and head north on Heaslip.

Around the Airport

1South side approach runway 36

From Heaslip take Wyatt Road westbound. Make a right into Helps Road. The approaching aircraft will be overhead now.

2West side ramp and runway view

Heaslip Road runs along the western perimeter of the base. From there the main runway traffic can be watched. Also, a distant view of the ramp is possible. Best option is to turn into Pellew Rd because Heaslip road is a very busy road.

3Northwest side approach runway 18

Continuing on Heaslip and just before the base perimeter ends, you can make a right into Penfield Road. This is a dirt road. You can now spot the incoming aircraft from the north and photograph them in the morning.

4North side ramp view

Follow Penfield Road eastbound along the perimeter fence and keep following that. When the road bends sharply to the north, you will have a view of the ramp and shed that is still about 1.5 km to the southeast. Unfortunately, the serial presentation on the P-3 make them impossible to identify. The smaller ARDU aircraft are towed to the flightline shed when flying. Also, you can see the two stored Devons that are in a private estate off Womma Rd just to the north of the base.

5DSTO area

On the eastern outskirts of the airfield the DSTO area starts. From the road running from north to south past the gate, cutting the military terrain in half, you can see the dumped aircraft. The southernmost part of this road is called West Avenue.
