General

Royal Australian Naval base Nowra, or HMAS Albatross, houses the flying units of the navy. These solely operate helicopters although chartered business jets are also used. There is also a small aero club which is only open to public travel by prior permission. Lastly, the base houses the Fleet Air Arm Museum with a large collection of interesting exhibits and good views of the operational proceedings.

Layout

The airfield has two intersecting runways. Most hangars are along the aprons in the northeast quarter of the base. Northernmost is the museum's hangar and south from there are most oeprational hangars. However, the Seahawk hangars are 'around the corner' towards the threshold of runway 26.

North of runway 08/26 and near the 03 threshold is the aeroclub and military visitors ramp. South of this runway are two deck landing simulators to practice shipborn operations; these are the small 'dots' on the map (the black parts are the fake hangars that are next to the fake decks!).

Getting There

The base is south of the village of Nowra which itself is well south of Sydney, about 100km. It can be reached by taking the aptly named Albatross road southbound out of Nowra. Alternatively, take the No.1 through road, Princes Highway, southbound and take the Btu road westbound from there.

Around the Airport

1FAA Museum

From the museum, good views are possible of the 21 approach as well as the northern part of the operational ramp.

2Braidwood rd, west side ramp view

On the west side of the 23 threshold, Braidwood road can be found. This leads south past the perimeter fence and yields good views of the northern operational ramps.

3Approach runway 08

Continuing on Braidwood, you will pass the approach to runway 08. After a short while you can make a left into Parma road and when that road bends right go straight into the gravel track. Drive back to the fence turn left and proceed until you nearly reach Braidwood road again. From here, a spot in the 08 approach is easy to find.

4South west side ramp view and dump

When you go to spot 3, you will actually have to pull over past teh last bend, or walk to the crash gate. This will take you directly behind a dumped Wessex and SH-2G. From here the Seahawk ramp can also be seen and some can be reaqd off when they are parked in the right manner and the heat haze is not too severe.

5South side ramp view

For another angle at the Seahawks, in the odd case that they are not readable from spot 4, you can take Parma again. From Parma you have some views on the Seahawk ramp. Although the distance is bigger, due to the fact that the choppers have large side codes they can still be read.

When doing circuits the helicopters pass along the restaurant terrace of the museum at spot 1 (100mm, Erwin van Dijkman)

From the same spot, the parked Seakings and Ecureuils on the flightline can be spotted (spot 1, 400mm, Erwin van Dijkman)
