General

Mahovljani (formerly known as Laktaši, after the nearby village) is the international airport of Banja Luka, Bosnia's second largest city. The airport was built as a domestic airport and reserve base for the Yugoslav air force, and was permanently used by the air force of the Republic of Srpska between 1992 and 2006. The airfield still houses some of the latter's fighters in storage, but in 2006, the air arm officially merged with the air force of Bosnia & Herzegovina. Mahovljani is a fairly open airfield and views are generally good.

Layout

Banja Luka has a single north-south runway. The civil terminal can be found to the south east, whereas the military occupies the south-western and the north-eastern parts of the airfield.

Getting There

The airport is situated about 20kms north of Banja Luka, half way between the town and the Croatian border and to the west of road no.E661. The airfield of Zalužani is located 12kms to the south as the crow flies.

Around the Airport

1Civil apron

The civil apron is located on the south east side of the airfield. The airport can be reached easily from road no.E661 by its own entrance road. Both sides of the civil terminal permit for viewing. Photography should be best in the morning.

2Approach 35

Although woods allow no clear views of the treshold, both sides are fairly open. Aircraft on approach can easily be seen and photographed from the road rounding the 35 threshold, which can be reached by taking the first turn left after heading south from the terminal. A bit further up on this road, the preserved and pole-mounted Jastreb can be seen on the base.

3Storage - south west side

Coming from spot 2, turn right by keeping the fence on your right. About 200mts after the turn, four open shelters can be found right along the fence. The jet aircraft of the former air force of the Republic of Srpska can be found here and can easily be read off as just a few shrubs are growing between the fence and the shelters. As the aircraft have been offered for sale to Serbia, we do not know how long they will stay here.

4Approach 17

The northern approach can also be reached although the road passing it is pretty far from the threshold so aircraft are passing fairly high here. You can drive around the airfield on both sides, but obviously, the western route is not too easy. Instead, head back to road no.E661 and follow the myriad as depicted on the map. Depending on the time of your visit, you will find yourself a reasonable spot along the road for photography.

5Runway 17/35 east side

In the morning, spot 5 can be very nice. Half way and very close to the runway, a few shrubs are between the road and the runway and with some luck you may be able to make some great shots from here.
