General

This Canadian Forces base is located on the Eastern side of Vancouver Island (British Columbia) and is home to two squadrons operating a mixture of aircraft. It also offers a relatively small civil terminal for Canadians wishing to leave the country. Located on/near the premises is a nice air force museum. Though organising a tour here is not a huge problem the base offers nice opportunities from the outside as well.

Getting There

You can reach the base by travelling the island (either from North to South or from South to North) using highway 19 or road number 19A. From both roads you must exit/end up at Courtenay. From there CFB Comox is signposted and by following the signs you end up af the main gate near the museum.

Around the Airport

1Runway 30

A very nice spot for photography (and reading) is the spot along the treshold of runway 30. From here you can take pics of the aircraft taking off and landing. Though it looks pretty close you still need about 300 to 400 mm analog for fighters. The Orions are OK with around 200 mm. To get here you turn left from the main gate towards the civil terminal (Knight Road). Continue on this road and turn left just after the base fence ends. While following the fence from the only road there is you will end up at the spot. This is near a 180+ degree turn in the road.

2North side

The approach of runway 12 is not that good as runway 30 but still worth a visit if this runway is in use. From the road just outside the Northern fence you can read and photograph the landing aircraft. Any a/c positioned at the alert barns nearby can be read. To get here turn right from the main gate and turn right again after the base fence stops.

3Museum

From the museum you get a good view of the aircraft parked on the civil apron.

4Near runway 36

This spot is OK for reading military aircraft parked outside on the tarmac. You pass this spot while travelling from the main gate to spot 1.

5Runway 30 opposite side

Depending on the position of the sun you can also visit spot 5 for photography options when runway 30 is in use. You need to get as close to the fence as possible along Knight Road.
