General

Trenton is home of the transport fleet of the Canadian Forces. Based no.8 Wing also has a SAR helicopter squadron and controls the storage and technical facilities of ATESS both here and at Mountainview. The 412 transport squadron that handles VIP transport is based at Ottawa but belongs to 8 Wing as well. The Wing supports the co-located National Air Force Museum of Canada which is run by volunteers. This museum has a nice outdoor park and a freshly restored Halifax in a new dome hangar.

Layout

Part of the base, notably the section near the museum, has an open base policy. The active units however, are in a separate security area. From the Golf links in the northwest corner of the base, the ramps can be viewed. The east gate parking lot also offers some angle on the easternmost hangars and ramps. Both spots are officially out of bounds though, that is why they are not listed below.

Getting There

Trenton is west of Belleville on the Bay of Quinte. The base hugs the eastern outskirts of Trenton village. From highway 401 take exit 526 where you can see a CF-5 on a pool next to a Holiday Inn Trenton hotel. Follow Glen Miller road, make a left onto Hamilton, road number 22. Then right onto road number 21, RCAF road. This will lead you straight past the museum, ATESS hangars and runway 06 threshold.

Around the Airport

1National Air Force Museum of Canada

From RCAF road drive onto the parking lot near the National Air Force Museum. At the back of this and from the museum park, you will be able to see some aircraft on the ATESS ramp and in their hangar. You will be passing a preserved CT-133 at the West gate.

2West side ramp view

A little bit to the south of the museum there is an abandoned house with parking lot on the west side of RCAF road. Park your car here and you will be able to read off the Hercules and choppers that are parked outside. With strong binoculars you can make some aircraft in the west side of the big maintenance hangar as well. Alternatively, you could park at the large parking area next to some sport fields and health center. From the parking, or if you walk towards the County Road, you can spot the transporters and helicopters.

3West side approach runway 06

Still further south you come at the crossroad with road number 2 and Dundas street East. Pass the traffic lights and park your car at the parking spot for the memorials and sporting fields. You can position yourself here for landing traffic into runway 06. You could also walk to the fence to spot the aircraft at the northwest aprons or walk along the fence for the last needed serials.

4South side ramp views

Road number 2 eastbound is rather busy but offers some views between and sometimes into hangars. Driving along th eroad will let you spot the aircraft. From the indicated spot for instance, you will be able to view the 424sqn hangar. However, this road has No Parking signs all over the place so be warned. It is better to park at spot 3 or at the Pizza Hut at the north side and walk back if needed.

5East side approach runway 24

Still going eastbound on road 2 you will be able to make a left into Whites road after you passed the airfield. You can drive until the fence line is reached and spot in the approach of runway 24 there. There is a abandoned piece of land at which you can park your car for good shots till 1500lt. From that time, you better move along White lane to the north, pass the railroad and park at the entrance to a gate. Along the railraod there is a small housing which is a good spot for photography. Or you could bypass the gate and enter the waste land via the road for a good spot for photography.

6Taxiway and landing 24

Near spot 5, on the south side of the taxiway, a military unit housing and parking can be found. It is located just off Whites Rd on the road that leads into a trailer park. Just past the housing, spot 6 can be found. From there aircraft on the taxiway and runway 24 can be photographed till around 1500lt. You will need a five step ladder or car as it is fenced off. In 2013, the situation has deteriorated due to the installment of a extra set of fencing around the base. You need a tall ladder or car to look over both fences now.
