General

Bagotville is Canada's sole fighter base in the eastern part of the country and can be found in the francophone province of Québec. The base has an open base policy but this is not intended for the aviation enthusiast. The base museum offers tours around the military ramps during the summer, seven days a week. In a secondary role, the airfield serves as a regional gateway to the scenic Saguenay-Lac St.-Jean area.

Layout

Originally, Bagotville featured the typical Canadian triangle runway system, but nowadays only two runways remain in use. The main runway runs east-west. The smaller 18/36 runway is mainly used for light civil air traffic. All facilities are located on the north side of runway 11/29. The civil terminal is situated in the north western part and the military area is located in the north eastern part of the base. No views can be obtained from the southside of the base as this area is covered with forest and is part of the military restricted area.

Getting There

Bagotville is located just south of road no.170 halfway between the cities of La Baie and Chicoutimi, which make up the municipality of Saguenay. Saguenay itself can be found 200km north of Québec City and can be reached by road no.175.

Around the Airport

1North side approach 29

Approach 29 is mostly in use and there is a public viewing area just off road no.170. The viewing area is clearly signposted from the road, and offers views of aircraft using runway 29. As it is situated north of the centerline it is not suitable for photography though.

2South side approach 29

To graph aircraft on finals for runway 29 you will have to move your vehicle eastward, in the direction of La Baie. As the southside of road no.170 offers no views, the best thing to do is to park your car on the north side of the road in the undeveloped area. You can clearly see landing aircraft coming in over the valley but they are still a bit high when they pass spot 2. This is the best spot for photography with a western wind and you can adjust your distance to the centerline by walking up and down the main road.

3South side approach 11

Spot 3 is definitely the best spot to take pictures around the airfield but you have to be lucky with an eastern wind. Continuing on the road no.170 towards Chicoutimi, take the second road on your left, which is called Chemin du Plateau Sud. After a few curves, this road leads around the 11 threshold. There's a small parking area in the corner and you can walk a few meters to the spot of your liking. It is a bit hard to see the aircraft coming in, but the sun is in your favour the entire day.

4Civil terminal

The small civil terminal is situated just west of the 18 threshold. Simply follow the signs off the road no.170, unsurprisingly leading to Chemin de l'Aeroport. From the parking lot and around the terminal building, aircraft can easily be seen and photographed. After noon, aircraft landing on runway 18 can be photographed nicely as well.

5Musée de la Defence Aérienne

The base museum offers a nice collection of aircraft, most of which were flown from the base. The museum is only open to the public from mid-June to late September, but all its aircraft are clearly visible from road no.170. When the museum is open, guided tours are organized on the military base daily at 09.45 am and 02.00pm. It is recommended to reserve for the tours ahead. The tour gives a good oppportunity to read off serials, photography is not allowed though. From the museum site it is also possible to view activities on runway 18.

6Military ramps

A sneak peek of the military ramps can be obtained from road no.170 where two crashgates exist. Views are hindered by omnipresent obstacles and lingering around is not recommended.

Spot 3 is the best spot for photography, but you have to be blessed with an eastern wind (Wim Sonneveld).

Another shot from spot 3, taken late in the afternoon (Wim Sonneveld).
