General

The old international airport of Montréal holds general aviation, provincial government aircraft and a military helicopter squadron. Some of the ramps and the 18/36 runway are out of use. However, it remains a very busy airport, the fifth' busiest in the country with nearly 200.000 annual movements.

Getting There

The airport is in eastern Montréal, that is, to the east of the St.Lawrence river just north of highway 116.

Around the Airport

1Southern approach rwy 06L

You will have to find a spot along the airport perimeter road for the approach to runway 06L. This place works fine in the morning as well as in the late afternoon, but you have to relocate a bit westward for that obviously.

2Southern approach rwy 06R

A little bit further to the east along the same airport perimeter road, you should be able to watch the approaching aircraft to the much shorter runway 06R.

3East side ramp view

Still continuing counter-clockwise on the boulevard de l'Aeroport you will be able to catch a glimpse of the eastern ramps.

4Northern approach rwy 24R

Now northbound on the aforementioned boulevard de l'Aeroport you are driving parallel to the short runway. From this road the northern approach can be watched. You can pick a spot for both morning and afternoon along this road.

5Northern approach rwy 24R

On the northern side you can drive along the Chemin de l'Aeroport and you will drive underneath the approach to runway 24R. From this spot you can also have a view at the north eastern ramps, the Pratt & Whitney Canada facilities, if the hedges permit.

6North western ramp view

Continue counter clockwise around the airport and make a left onto the Chemin de la Savane. When the road forks to the right go straight on towards the big hangar. You might be able to see some aircraft parked along the taxiway, the ramp here seems to be disused.

7Western ramp view

Tracking back to the Chemin de la Savane, this road bends back to the airport. Take Rue Leckie heading towards the Canadian Forces Base gate. Make a left onto the Rue Industrielle and you might be able to spot some of the helicopters parked on the ramps on both sides of the main hangar.

8South west side ramp view

Follow the Rue Industrielle in the opposite direction, south westward. At the end of this road you will have a view of the south western ramps with mostly stored aircraft.
