General

Once home to the air academy of the former Yugoslav air force, today, Zemunik houses its Croatian equivalent. Moreover, Croatia's flying fire fighters are based here. The civil airport serves the city of Zadar, but passenger stats still lag behind pre-war figures. The area around the airport was the scene of heavy fighting in the 90s, which saw the village of Smokovic going up in smoke. As a result land mines are still present around Zemunik Donji, so be careful when leaving the beaten track! Beware, aircraft spotting and photography are not generally understood as a hobby in Croatia.

Layout

Zemunik has an interesting layout. Unfortunately, main road 502 that used to cross the taxiway, has now been blocked. Depending on the wind direction, both runways are used by the military as well as civil traffic. The aprons are situated west of the runways. Nowadays, the shelter area near the 14 threshold is probably not used by aircraft.

Getting There

From Zadar, take regional road 502 east and you will see the airport about 8km from the city centre on your right. Coming from the A1, take the Zadar 2 exit which is situated east of the airport and takes you to road 502.

Around the Airport

1Civil terminal

The civil terminal is where spot 1 can be found. It does not offer great views but most aircraft parked in front of the terminal can be read off. Photography depends on their position but is best at the end of the day.

2502 Dead End

A Swiss-like scene can be viewed if aircraft pass here road on the taxiway; 502 used to be a through road but has been cut off since the new D424 leads around the airfield. You can only park your car near the soccer field (at your right position heading towards the A1) and walk the old 502 to crash gates p14 at your right, and p13 at the end, with both good visibilities.

322 Approach east side

Heading between the runways, take the first road on your right, right in the sharp curve. This road leads all the way along the 04/22 runway, although most of it will be covered in trees, preventing good views. Near the 22 threshold you will be able to picture any aircraft on finals till about 02.00AM.

4Runway 04/22 east side

Continue along the perimeter fence from spot 3 until you reach a Y-junction with another paved road. Right here, you will find an open spot where trees do not disrupt your view of the runway. As with spot 3, photography on the runway is best till about 02.00AM.

504 Approach south side

If runway 04 is in use, spot 5 is the place to go. The road parallel to the runway crosses a dirt road here, which leads past the 04 threshold. This is a convenient and quiet spot to witness aircraft on finals for runway 04. You may move up and down the road a bit to adjust your position to the sun for the best photo angle until 02.00AM.

6Approach 32 east side

In Donji Zemunik, a short road can be found on your left, leading west, back to the runway. Easy to miss, this spot is great for photography when runway 32 is in use; moreover, when aircraft leave the runway at the 32 threshold they are an easy prey for your camera. You can easily pole off the fire fighters, which are put outside the two hangars on the military's most southern apron. But be careful, a guard will be nearby.

7Military aprons - east side

If any aircraft parked on the southern apron escaped your binoculars, this spot comes handy. As the village is located higher than the airfield, it provides an excellent overview of the eastern part of the airfield. Don't forget to look for the preserved aircraft behind the apron. The easiest way to go here is to head to Zemunik Donji and turn left to Smokovic. Take one of the paved roads on your left and continue south. One of them turns into a dirt road, which brings you back to the old 502, but no longer to spot 2.

8Military aprons - west side

In Zemunik Donji, continue to Smokovic. Just before leaving the village, take the last paved road on your left, which will bring you to spot 8. From here you will have good views of the training aircraft on the large apron in the middle of the airfield, although the distance is considerable. Be careful here, mines are still found in this area, so better do not start a walk through the fields to get the last serial...
