General

Playa Baracoa (not to be mixed up with Baracoa, a small airport on Cuba’s east coast) is a combined civil-military airfield 25 kilometers west of Havana Centre. The airfield serves as the main hub for the (military) airline Aerogaviota and also houses the VIP transport unit of the Cuban air force. For the latter reason, security is tight and good views are scarce. Taking a flight with Aerogaviota from here will likely provide the best opportunities for spotting. Be aware, plane spotting is neither understood nor appreciated in Cuba!

Layout

East side

East of the runway the airfield houses UM 3405 Regimiento Ejecutivo, the air force’s VIP transport unit. The main platform is used by its executive An-24s. To the south of the main platform there are some helicopter landing spots. The road running parallel to the runway is closed to all traffic. Aerogaviota’s civil terminal is situated on the north eastern tip of the airfield.

West side

The west side of the airfield is home to UM 3688 Regimiento de Transporte, the military unit providing aircraft to Aerogaviota. Its aircraft operate from a large ramp but some well hidden parking spots behind the ramp exist as well.

Getting There

Coming from Havana Centre, take the famous Malecon Boulevard west which will become Avenida 5ta outside the city centre. Follow this road to the west, while keeping the Gulf of Mexico on your right. After crossing a creek, you will enter the village of Playa Baracoa. The village is edged by another creek on its west side, which acts as the airfield’s perimeter. The road will lead under the northern approach.

Around the Airport

1East side approach runway 20 & north side ramp

The main road runs past Aerogaviota’s civil terminal. When aircraft are parked on the ramp behind the terminal they can be viewed from the parking lot opposite the terminal and/or from the main road just past the parking lot. Aircraft on finals can also be viewed from the parking lot, although you are clearly visible from the manned gate and the terminal…

2East side approach runway 20

Near the entrance of the parking lot, a dirt road runs to the sea and further under the approach. As this road bends to the left, there’s an open spot with an unhindered view of the approach. Here you can park your car out of sight from the gate and the terminal although at times a security post is manned past the approach, further on the dirt road.

3East side ramp & west side approach 02

Follow the main road for about 3.5kms and turn left to Abajo, after leaving the village, turn left again. This road leads under the southern approach. Before passing the threshold, you will have a diagonal, though distant view of the VIP unit’s fixed wing platform. You might be able to read off some of the aircraft parked there at the end of the day, with the sun at your back and minimal heat-waves. Beware of the guard on the other side of the threshold!

4East side approach 02

On the other side of the threshold you can park your car on shoulder of the road and try to catch some of the aircraft landing from the south side. But beware; a guard is situated just past the threshold and two more can be found a little further down the road.

5Maintenance hangar

The only spot that may give a view of some aircraft parked on the west side of the airfield. The maintenance hangar here has aprons on both sides, though trees may obstruct your view.
