General

Holguin-Frank Pais is a combined civil-military airfield just south of Holguin. It is served by many international charters as well as Cuban carriers Cubana and Aerocaribbean, both flying to international and domestic destinations. A fighter regiment of the Cuban air force and a helicopter detachment are also based here. Security is tight but the base is your best and safest chance to see Cuban fighters in action. Large serials on the MiGs (also under the wings) allow you to keep a safe distance. Taking a flight from here is a recommended way to practise your hobby. Be aware, plane spotting is neither understood nor appreciated in Cuba!

Layout

East side

Basically a military base, Holguin houses shelter areas on all sides of the runway, except on its east side. Two civil terminals have been built on the north eastern side of the airfield, the one on the right handles domestic flights and the left one (the largest) handles international flights.

West side

The west side of the airfield is entirely occupied by the military with a large platform and four separate parking spots halfway down the runway. The military gate is on the north side of the base and is guarded by a MiG-23ML.

Getting There

The best way to arrive at Holguin is by plane, as this will give the best views of the ramps. Coming from the town, head south on Carretera Central. The airport is well signposted.

Around the Airport

1South eastern shelter area

Coming from the terminal and heading south, take the first road to the right after the airfield’s fence ends. When the road bends left, six shelters can be found close to the fence. If you are very lucky, you might get a glimpse of the odd MiG here.

2East side approach runway 05

Follow the road while keeping the fence on your right your next stop is where the fence bends away from the road. Some buildings and shrubs can be found here. You might be able to park your car out of sight and hide in the shrubs. The aircraft on finals for runway 05 are still high, but you won’t have trouble reading off large serials and registrations applied under the wings.

3West side approach runway 05

Continue your way towards the creek and take the dirt road on your right, leading north. From this road, the first dirt track on your right leads straight towards the fence. Later during the day, this spot comes as a good substitute for spot 2.

4Ramps & runway overview

Certainly the best spot to get an overall view of the airfield is the terrace of the international terminal. The aircraft parked on the military ramps diagonal across the runway can be read off (usually MiG-21s, L-39s and Mi-8/17s can be witnessed), as well as the aircraft parked on the civil aprons. The shelters right in front of the terminal are known to house MiG-23s. Moreover, flying activities can be photographed like many tourists will do, regardless which runway is in use. Some cameras are registering your activities, so beware when zooming in on the military stuff…

5East side ramps & runway overview

The domestic terminal also provides some good views of the civil aprons, as well as the flying activities.

6East side approach runway 23

When in use, aircraft on finals for runway 23 are likely to avoid flying over the city. Just off the main road a dirt road runs to the right where aircraft can be caught turning in for their final approach. As with spot 2 and 3, you won’t have trouble reading off large serials and registrations applied under the wings of the aircraft or even making pictures.

Spot 4 is probably the best spot to make pictures of active aircraft like this Mi-17. Peter Heeneman.

Also from spot 4, a good pair of binoculars comes handy here. Unknown.
