General

San Antonio de los Baños is the major air base in Cuba and houses several types of fighter aircraft. Unlike any other Cuban air base, this airfield does not have a civil terminal, so no excuses to linger around. San Antonio is home to UM 1779 Regimiento de Caza operating all fighter types of the air force as well as some L-39C jet trainers and Zlin 142 liaision and training aircraft. Helicopters are permanently detached to the base as well. San Antonio is home to an interesting base museum which is unfortunately neither open to the general public, nor are its aircraft visible from outside. Beware plane spotting is neither understood nor appreciated in Cuba!

Layout

South east side

The airfield is divided by its main runway 05/23 in a south east and a north west side. The south eastern area houses the following groups of buildings from west to east along the main runway: the alert shelters, the aircraft of the first squadron, the base museum, the two main aprons and the command centre.

North west side

The north west side of the airfield houses from west to east the following groups of buildings: the shelters of the second squadron, the maintenance hangars (north of the runway 12/30) and the shelters of the third squadron. The latter are currently used for storage of aicraft, as well as runway 01/19.

Getting There

The easiest way to get there is to hire a car in Havana and take the ‘highway’ that heads south towards San Antonio de los Baños. If you keep heading south once the highway turns onto a single lane road you end up driving along the concrete wall surrounding the air base.

Around the Airport

1Approach 23 & 30 - Cemetery

This cemetery is located near the 23 threshold and offers a good excuse to be in the vicinity of the air base. Unfortunately the cemetery is located exactly under the approach of runway 23. Operating aircraft are therefore very hard to photograph or read, although serials applied under the wings might solve this problem. However, if runway 30 is in use, the cemetery might become a good place to read off some aircraft on finals.

2Main gate

The main gate is guarded by a blue MiG-21PFM with the regiment number painted on the nose. It is situated on a pole and can be seen very easy if you pass along the gate.

3Approach 05 - westside

The west side of the base gives good opportunities for nice landing shots of aircraft on finals for runway 05 and good reading. The area is quite open and has a number of locations to sit down. On the other hand the landing area is frequented by local farmers who might take too much of an interest in you.

4North west side

Driving along the north west side of the base gives a nice view of the air base lay-out and offers the opportunity to see the aircraft parked on the platform. Turn left off the road to Alquizar after the base wall ends.

5Approach 23 & 30 south side

For a more distant and probably safe view of the 23 landing, this spot may be handy. Half way on this road is a bushy area which could be a good place to hide and obtain views of the approach. The large serial numbers will enable you to read the aircraft from this spot.
