Naha is Japan's southernmost major airport and part of the 'trunk route system', the high-density domestic airline network. Due to its strategic position (between mainland Japan and Taiwan) several airfields have been constructed on the island of Okinawa. Naha is the only civil airport in operation but also houses airplanes of all three armed forces - and quite a lot of them too. Many JMSDF Orions are based here as well as a wing of F-15s plus supporting T-4 trainers and rescue unit. Finally, the ground forces have helos and light planes here and so does the coast guard.
On the civil side all well-known Japanese carriers visit Naha and a few of them that specialize in Pacific island-hopping are based here. Foreign carriers connecting to Naha include Asiana, China Airlines, China Eastern and Philippines. All in all, this is a busy place with a 24-hour operation.
The airport lies on the most western tip of Okinawa island, just a few kilometres from Naha city centre. Approaches and departures from either side onto the single runway are over sea, co-ordinated with those of Kadena air base in the north. Most buildings and the Self Defence Force base are on the landside, but a prominent typhoon-proof hangar plus additional structures are at seaside. A string of aprons and hangars parallels the runway on the landside, dominated by the new terminal. Remotely in the north lies the old terminal, now used as the international terminal but with little traffic.
Most people visiting Okinawa will arrive as a passenger at this very airport. When already on the island, the standard means of transport connect to the (new) terminal. The new part of route 331 touches the perimeter and a side loop formed by routes 231 and 332 leads to the terminal car parks. The Naha monorail ends at the airport station and tickets on this line cost a maximum of around 300 yen. There are bus services too and of course taxis.
