General

Nyutabaru, north of the city of Miyazaki on Kyushu island, has lost its most attractive inhabitants over the years but is still well worth a visit. is one of the most attractive military airfields of Japan. Two Hikotai with their Eagles and T-4s usually make the day for photographers and number crunchers alike. Logging a bunch of aircraft before 8am, or watching dozens of individual sorties a day, are no exception. Added to the fighter action are the movements by the resident SAR unit and the occasional visitor. Traditionally, Nyuta Base hosts the second last JASDF airshow of the year in December (with Naha staging the last one).

The base has vantage points all around, allowing for photography from sunrise to sunset. A lot of towing of aircraft onto the apron usually takes place between 7 and 8 am. Security personnell are known to kindly interview non-Japanese enthusiasts.

In 2009, construction work started along the southern perimeter, degrading photograpy along the southern fence. A new runway as well as buildings seem to be under construction. Possibly, Nyuta is to be used as a relief airport for noise-sensitive Miyazaki. We will upgrade this guide as facts become more clear.

Layout

The base lies on a shallow hill and is quite open, resulting in photo points for all settings, and spotting points including hangar views on the north side. The construction work along the southern fence has taken out one mid-runway spot and interferes with the view from spots 3 and 4, but these are still worth a try. Apart from the new structures and some remote dispersals south of the beginning of runway 10, all buildings and aprons are north of the runway(s).

Getting There

Nyutabaru lies some 20km north of Miyazaki, near Shintomi. The Higashi-Kyushu Expressway from Miyazaki ends near the air base at the Saito Interchange. A further extension to Kawaminami is under construction. Coming from northern Kyushu, the easiest drive here is via this toll road.

When driving along the coast, one will pass through Shintomi, which is just to the east of our map. The road to spot 2 starts in Shintomi opposite a Lawson's on road 10. It heads west from there, uphill to the base. Alternatively, take road 44 north from where it crosses road 18, to arrive at spot 3.

Around the Airport

1Taxi & holding 28, am

Until approximately 9.30am, this spot allows for attractive taxi shots, including dramatic head-on views. The activities near the holding of 28 (or exit of runway 10, where drag chutes will be dropped) can be covered well from here. A stepladder or similar is required to get above the fence, while one stands on the verge of road 44. Parking on the spot is very limited.

2Final 28

Where road 44 bends around the field, some parking space is available - with inevitable vending machines for your comfort. Both the embankment and the grass area on the opposite side of the road to Shintomi offer great photo opportunities for landings on 28, the latter being higher than the runway. As the day progresses, the light gets better.

3Runway 28

A spot along the perimeter, also popular with locals, with ample parking space next to a crash gate. A track runs along the fence giving choice of locations, but the construction work will limit the options. This is one of the best spots to read numbers. The light is OK roughly from 9am until 5pm. Stepladders or similar required for photography of aircraft on the runway. Departures from 10 will mostly be airborne and clear of the fence when they pass this spot. 400mm is advisable for fighter shots.

4Runway 10/28

This spot may be harder to reach when rain has soaked the fields and tracks. The possibilities here are similar to spot 3, including the need for steps to clear the fence. With runway 28 in use, take-off shots can usually be made without something to stand on. Once again, the construction work could be a problem. Combined with spot 3, this one should get the log of what is outside complete. Parking is best done along the paved road south of the spot.

5Final 10

This spot is the counterpart of spot 2, with a good view on landings on runway 10. However, the light is best in the morning and deteriorates during the day. Parking should be OK in a layby. Runway 10 seems to be used less often than runway 28.

6Runway 10 north side

This spot is suitable for taxi shots early in the morning (on the main track) or late in the afternoon (near the holding bay). It may also be a starting point to photograph landings on 10 in the first hours of daylight, finding the right location along the road on foot.

7Taxiway runway 10

A quieter spot, but one with less options, than spot 6. From here, one overlooks the taxiway from the north, meaning the light can be good very early (mainly for inbounds from 28) and rather late (mainly for outbounds to 10). Steps are required for unhindered photography.

8Hangar view

A dead-end road ends at the fence, behind some of the largest hangars on the field. Especially with lights on inside and darkness outside, many a frame can be polled from here.

Spot1 is best in the early morning, and great to take pictures of the planes leaving early - but no more Phantoms of course. (Maurice Hendriks)

Two Hiko Kyodotai Eagles, that used to be based here, just before a formation touch-down as seen from spot 2 by Marcel van Bielder.
