Nyutabaru, north of the city of Miyazaki on Kyushu island, has lost its most attractive inhabitants over the years but is still well worth a visit. is one of the most attractive military airfields of Japan. Two Hikotai with their Eagles and T-4s usually make the day for photographers and number crunchers alike. Logging a bunch of aircraft before 8am, or watching dozens of individual sorties a day, are no exception. Added to the fighter action are the movements by the resident SAR unit and the occasional visitor. Traditionally, Nyuta Base hosts the second last JASDF airshow of the year in December (with Naha staging the last one).
The base has vantage points all around, allowing for photography from sunrise to sunset. A lot of towing of aircraft onto the apron usually takes place between 7 and 8 am. Security personnell are known to kindly interview non-Japanese enthusiasts.
In 2009, construction work started along the southern perimeter, degrading photograpy along the southern fence. A new runway as well as buildings seem to be under construction. Possibly, Nyuta is to be used as a relief airport for noise-sensitive Miyazaki. We will upgrade this guide as facts become more clear.
The base lies on a shallow hill and is quite open, resulting in photo points for all settings, and spotting points including hangar views on the north side. The construction work along the southern fence has taken out one mid-runway spot and interferes with the view from spots 3 and 4, but these are still worth a try. Apart from the new structures and some remote dispersals south of the beginning of runway 10, all buildings and aprons are north of the runway(s).
Nyutabaru lies some 20km north of Miyazaki, near Shintomi. The Higashi-Kyushu Expressway from Miyazaki ends near the air base at the Saito Interchange. A further extension to Kawaminami is under construction. Coming from northern Kyushu, the easiest drive here is via this toll road.
When driving along the coast, one will pass through Shintomi, which is just to the east of our map. The road to spot 2 starts in Shintomi opposite a Lawson's on road 10. It heads west from there, uphill to the base. Alternatively, take road 44 north from where it crosses road 18, to arrive at spot 3.
Spot1 is best in the early morning, and great to take pictures of the planes leaving early - but no more Phantoms of course. (Maurice Hendriks)
Two Hiko Kyodotai Eagles, that used to be based here, just before a formation touch-down as seen from spot 2 by Marcel van Bielder.
