General

Omura is a Japan Marine Self-Defence Force installation near Nagasaki, in fact it is opposite the bay from Nagasaki airport.

Getting There

From the Nagasaki expressway, take exit 9 Omura. After the toll booth, at a five way crossing, veer slightly left and straight following the signpost for airport / road 34. Basically, this road needs to be followed until you come up to a T-junction. Make a left at this traffic lights and a right at the next one. That leads you up to the road running parallel to the fence and spots 2 and 1.

Around the Airport

1Hangars, Taxi and Take off - A.M.

Head north along the fence and park in the corner were the road bends east again. From this spot, the helicopters often come taxiing towards you for take-off. Also, it offers a different angle in the hangars for reading serials.

2Hangars and take-off - A.M.

Tracking back south along the fence, by foot or car, you can stop to read off serials. Past the mid-way point, the chances are best that the helicopters have cleared the fence. Otherwise, use a step ladder.

3South side Approach - P.M. harbour

Omura is best in the morning. Because the base is bordered by water on the west, limited opportunities exist p.m. On the South side, off the road to the civil airport, there is a small harbour. Leave you car there, or at the Nippon car rental parking lot, and walk west a bit. Not ideal along this busy road and choppers are bound to be high still.

4North side approach - P.M. near gate

The North side is equally difficult. There is a parking lot just South of the gate. Probably they will not leave you standing there for long.
