General

The small airfield of Chilpancingo de los Bravo is located about 80kms north of the well-known resort town of Acapulco. The main user of the airfield is the Mexican attorney-general, so expect tight security. The airfield is very open though and offers many good possibilities for spotting.

Layout

Chilpancingo has a single north-south runway, parallel to the adjacent highway 95D. General aviation is located in the south west corner, whereas the attorney general's apron and hangar can be found on the east side of the runway.

Getting There

Located just off highway 95D "Autopista del Sol", the tollroute between Mexico City and Acapulco, the airfield can clearly be seen from the elevated highway. Although the highway has numerous very short exits around Chilpancingo, the best one to take is the large exit just south of the airfield.

Around the Airport

1Southern overview

After leaving highway 95D at the large exit just south of the airfield, turn left no matter if you are coming from Mexico City or Acapulco. Just off the flyover there's room to stop your car for a minute and enjoy an overview of approach 33 and the southern part of the airfield.

2Approach 33 & southern apron

Follow the main road to the airport and turn right at the T-junction in front of the airport buildings. When the road makes a sharp right curve, park your car on either side of the road. You can walk to the fence for views of the apron or walk a little bit further away for views of small aircraft on finals for runway 33.

3PGR apron

Spot 3 is the place to go for numbercrunchers. Head back on the road parallel to the runway, past the airport buildings. From the third street on your left you will have excellent views of the PGR apron, which is situated right across the runway from here.

4Runway view

As Chilpancingo has no taxiways, a spot along the runway will always be good for nice pictures. Coming from spot 3, just follow the road along the airfield perimeter, when the main road bends west. Stop at the beginning of the dirt road and enjoy some nice views. This spot is best when runway 15 is in use and later in the afternoon.

5Approach 15 west side

As approach 15 is very open, there are numerous options to graph landing aircraft here. Try one of the roads on your left, which gives good views in the late afternoon.

6Approach 15 east side

Possibly the best spot around the airfield is spot 6. Just follow the road around the 15 threshold, if coming from spot 5, and find yourself a spot on the other side of the runway. Alternatively, there's a cemetery just north from here, which should also give nice views of aircraft on finals for runway 15. And you have not even seen the background yet...

7Northern overview

For a good overview of the north side of the airfield, try this footbridge over highway 95D. It can be reached from both directions: it is the first footbridge you will see when coming from Acapulco, and the second one, when coming from Mexico City.
