General

The airport of picturesque Oaxaca, pronounced as wah-HAH-ka, serves as an entry point for this tourist region of Mexico and also houses a small air force unit. Generally, the airport is considered one of the more accessable airports in Mexico to practise your hobby, although it will not always be understood nor appreciated.

Layout

Buildings are only located on the east side of the single 01/19 runway. From north to south you will find the general aviation, the attorney general, the terminal and the air force.

Getting There

There are no buslines between the town center and the airport, which is situated just west of road 175, south of the city. From Avenida Bustemante a bus departs for road 175 south, which is also known as Carretera Oaxaca-Puerto Angel. Leave the bus at km 7.5 on this road, from where you can walk to the airport in about 15 minutes. The airport is well signposted around the city for those arriving by car.

Around the Airport

1Terminal terrace

After arriving at the airport, you will find a staircase between the arrivals hall and the departures hall, which goes up to a restaurant with an outside terrace. From here, views of the platform are great, although photography is not allowed.

2General aviation & PGR

The general aviation and PGR facilities can be found just north of the terminal. Take the road on your right in front of the terminal, from where you will obtain some views on the platforms.

3Bosque El Toquio

Park your car on the dirt parking lot in front of the general aviation platform and continue by feet to the park at the end of the road, named Bosque El Toquio. The park itself provides excellent views of the runway. Walk through the park to the 19 threshold to find the propliner wrecks and watch the aircraft on finals.

4Approach 19 west side

Later in the day, walk around the northern threshold and take the first dirt road on your right. From here, pictures of aircraft using runway 19 can be made with the sun at your back.

5Helicopter apron

From the terminal, head back towards road 175, but instead, take the first paved road on your right. You will pass an athletic centre followed by the air force gate. Just south of the air force compound a park can be found. Park your car along the road and walk through this park, up to the fence. From here you can watch the helicopters parked on the air force apron.

6Approach 01 east side

From spot 5, continue on the same road along the park, heading south. Take the first road to your right, which leads around the 01 threshold. Park your car along the road and walk back in the same park again for nice views of approach 01.

7Approach 01 west side

Later in the day, move over to the other side of the runway from spot 6, by following the dirt road around the 01 threshold. Take the first road to your right again to find spot 7.

Excellent views of the runway are obtained from Bosque El Toquio (Spot 3, Fred Streep).

The terminal terrace gives good views of the main platform (Spot 1, Fred Streep).
