Home to more than half of the Mexican air force flying inventory, the no.1 air base of Mexico is located about 30kms north of Mexico City. Despite its sheer size, the base has some noteworthy spots to practise our hobby. Beside the gateguards, many more aircraft are preserved around the base.
Santa Lucia has a single 04/22 runway which is located on the north side of the huge area the base covers. Most of the base is fenced off by an impressive wall and the north side is adjacent to a railroad.
How to get out of Mexico City? Traffic in this huge metropolitan area can be a real challenge. The highway that leads to Santa Lucia is autopista 85D, a toll route, which is basically the extension of Avenida Insurgentes, a major north-south route crossing the city. Take the highway exit to Tecámac de Felipe Villanueva or BAM Santa Lucia. Cross Tecámac and continue north to Los Reyes Acozac. The main gate is on your left hand side.
