General

In 2002, 21.BLot (Baza Lotnictwa - Air Base) was formed, together with the based 39.elt and 40.elt, both equipped with the Su-22 fighter-bomber. In 2003, 39.elt was disbanded while 7.elt moved in from Powidz in 2008. The infrastructure of this air base was rebuilt in 1999 to accommodate the squadrons according NATO standards, with rapid deployment provisions. In 2010, 8.elt was based here as well and by 2012, the wing structure had been installed and the squadrons assigned to 21.BLT (Baza Lotnicza Taktycznego - Tactical Air Base).

In 2023, 21.SLT's Su-22s and helicopters have been moved to Miroslawiec in order to prepare Swidwin for the arrival of the F-35. This is expected to take place when the Łask unit is operational on the new type.

Layout

North of the runway, you will find the active squadrons. There is a flightline where all the flying Sukhois will be parked. On the southside there are the maintenance areas and the preserved aircraft.

Getting There

Swidwin lies in the middle of the northwestern part of Poland. The city is located on the crossing of the roads 151, 152 and 162. Do not forget the preserved Lim-5P "1976" near the train station.

Around the Airport

1Landing with easterly winds

From Swidwin, take the 152 towards Smardzko. After leaving the city limits, take the first left onto Spacerowa road. At the next T-junction, take a left and then a right to arrive at another T-junction. Take a left here and then a right and continue at the dirt road. The runway is at your right so positioning yourself here somewehere.

2landing with westerly winds

From Swidwin, take the 152 towards Smardzko. after passing the base entrance with parking, just before the small village of Smardzko, take the left towards the blue fencing and position yourself here.

Training flights sometimes make a short left circuit before landing. Walking down the road away from the fence at spot 2 then offers some great banking shot possibilities, as shown here with an Su-22 by Peter Nieuwkamp.

Also taken at spot 2 by Peter Nieuwkamp was this Su-22M-4 of 21.BLT with ''boar nose marks'', coming in for a full stop landing.
