In 1933, Okêcie Airport was installed as the new airport for Warsaw. After the war, LOT Polish Airlines resumed operations at Okêcie while the airport was rebuilt using existing facilities. In 1969 a new international terminal was built to handle 1 million passengers annually. In 1992, a new terminal (T1), with capacity for 3.5 million passengers per year, was built to replace the ageing complex. In March 2001, Warsaw Airport was renamed in honour of the Polish pianist Frédéric Chopin dropping the wellknown Okêcie name. In 2005, the old arrival hall from 70s was refurbished and reopened, and under the name "Etiuda" became a temporary terminal for the low-cost traffic. Since 2007 the T2, a newly built terminal adjacent to T1, has been gradually taking over the major part of the traffic. In March 2009 the Etiuda terminal was closed and low-cost carriers moved to T1. Together, 10 million passengers can be processed from 44 gates.
The airport has all of its terminals and aprons to the north. In between runways 29 and 33, the cargo apron is situated. Between runways 11 and 15 there is a small apron. The main terminals T1 and T2 are located north of the runways and taxiways. Preferential landing runway is runway 33 followed by runway 11, preferential take-off runway is runway 29, followed by runway 15
