General

This air force base is home to the F-16 fleet of the Força Aerea Portuguesa. It is located some 10 miles North of the city of Leiria. It is a good location for number crunchers and photographers, though there are more options for the first category.

Getting There

You can get to the base by taking the N109 (aka IC1) North from Leiria towards Figueria da Foz. After about 10 miles you can take the exit towards Monte Real and you will end up on the N349-1. If you keep following this road you will automatically end up at the round-about near the main gate. There are other options to exit the N109 but the road was under heavy reconstruction early 2006 which makes all other options subject to short notice changes.

Around the Airport

1Main gate

Though it does not happen often the main gate offers a spot for spotting (though you will only end up with numbers, no pics). Just right of the guards building there is a small grass field near a housing area that offers a view of the runway and taxi-track. For this position it does'nt matter whether runway 01 or 19 is in use. The authorities do not seem to care that you are there.

201 approach

The treshold of runway 01 is completely open and surrounded by an outside perimeter road. It offers plenty of spots for both photography and reading. Shots on the runway are just out of reach. To head left from the main gate (towards the town of Monte Real) and take a small road to the left after 400 or 500 meters. The road is called 'Ruo de Robeiro pt Carride' and you will end up at the threshold and find the position you prefer.

319 approach

The position is listed since you are able to get here but it is not the best spot in the world. The approach of runway 19 is too high and trees block the view. You can read the aircraft but your slot time is very limited. The same goes for taking pics. Even when operating runway 19 the spot near the treshold of runway 01 is a better alternative. To get here head South (left) from the main gate and turn right onto the N1183 towards Marinha Grande. You will see the approach lighting after a short while.

4Shelter area

A spot to include in your tour is spot 4. This gives a view of the shelter area and though the area is covered with trees it does give away some of its treasures. Good for an additional serial or two. To get here turn right from the N1183 just after you pass the approach. This is a dead-end road ending at a crash-gate of the base.
