General

Paya Lebar is a combined military and civil airport. In the latter capacity, it serves as alternate for Changi IAP. Also, the air force museum is situated here as well as some aircraft maintenance companies.

Layout

The airport has one main runway 02/20 and a secondary one. In practice, runway 02 is used most often. The eastern part of the airfield is under further development. The western half is occupied by, from south to north, the maintenance area, the civil terminal and, the military transport aircraft's apron.

The eastern half holds the military fighters with two dispersal areas. On the far east side a third runway is being constructed. Its status is unknown; it could be an emergency runway.

Getting There

By public transport

The Mass Rapid Transport system of Singapore is renowned and with reason; it wil bring you all around the island stat with ease. For Paya Lebar, take Eunos station of the EW (green) line. Take bus 94 and get of were the bus leaves the Eunos link for airport road. The AF Museum has a bus stop of its own.

Alternatively, you can walk from Eunos station. It is about half an hours walk. Head north along the apartment buildings on Eunos Crescent and Eunos Avenue 8. Cross the highway on the foot bridge, still heading north. Walk between the apartment buildings and proceed right on Ubi Avenue 1. Follow this along the left hand bend and make a right after yet another set of high rise buildings. Cross Eunos Link by footbridge and go left along Eunos after that. Upon reaching the crossroad with Kaki Bukit Avenue 1 make a right. For spot 1, cross this road and take Kaki Bukit Road 1, KBR1. For spot 6, proceed eastbound on KB Avenue 1. The high buildings on your right hand side after the next cross road, with Jalan Damai, are spot 6.

By car

From the Pan Island Express Way, take exit Jalan Eunos/Eunos Link northbound. From there you can reach spot 6 by going right on Kaki Bukit Avenue 1. For spot 1, cross KBA1 and make a right onto Kaki Bukit Avenue 2. For the other spots and to go clockwise around the airfield, stay on Eunos Link. For spot 2, make a right onto Airport Road. For the other ones, stay on Eunos, this becomes Hougang Avenue 3 after the cross roads.

From the Tampines Highway, take exit Tampines road and head south for the western part of the airfield. Take exit Tampines Avenue 10, for the eastern side and to reach the southern side quicker.

Around the Airport

1South side -approach runway 02

From Eunos Link, take Kaki Bukit Avenue 2. This heads straight for the perimeter wall. From there, and the adjoining piece of barren land, the approaching aircraft can be spotted and 'graphed. You can also pick a spot along Kaki Bukit Road 1, but you will be under the approach then.

2Airport rd over pass

The newly constructed fly-over over passes airport road. Just south of this, there is a pedestrian over pass. From this over pass you can photograph aicraft with some difficulty. You need 400mm and will be looking over some buildings. Only do-able for larger aircraft.

3Museum

If you stay on the airport side and not enter the over pass, you can make a right towards the airport on airport road. To the right is the Air Force Museum. From the esplanade of the museum building you can peek inside a hangar on the airfield, but that is the only glimpse you can get of the active stuff from here.

4ST Aero

From Eunos Link go right onto Airport Road. As the name suggests, this will take you onto the airfield terrain. This road crosses the taxiway from apron A (airside ramp) to apron B (landside ramp). It offers views from towed aircraft and the odd one parked outside, but only in the gates are open as the fence is covered in cloth. No photography as guards are present when aircraft are moved from one side to the other.

5Northeast side ramp

If you can beat the wall around the airport at the point were Tampines road bends, you can look straight down the Hercules ramp. You will need afternoon light for this and, tree climbing skills.

6North side - approach 20 - p.m.

The northern approach is less comfortable. You need to find a spot jus before the ramp from Tampines Road onto Tampines Expressway. Follow the Old Tampines Road for a bit. The trees prevent a clear view on the approach.

7Northside - approach runway 20 - a.m.

In the morning, you can best look for a spot on the north side of the Tampines Expressway (TPE). Cross the express way and make a right and left, so do not enter the TPE. You should now be on Lorong Halus. The approaching aircraft will be a bit high, but you have a better downwind view.

8Southeast side apartment buildings

With all those high rise apartment buildings there are bound to be some that render views of the airfield. Late last century, the best appartment complex was the one on the corner of Kaki Bukit Avenue 1 and Jalan Damai. These are two flats with a parking hall in between. Take apartment building 660, the second to last stairway and head for the 14th floor (by lift obviously ;-) From there you can see part of the Hercules ramp and airfield infrastructure. With the current pace of building, chances are that your view has become obstructed by now. If that is the case, find a high rise building closer to the airfield and report the new address to us!

The Singaporean Herks luckily are still camouflaged and adorned with large unit markings. (Spot 2, Robbert Snijders)

The newest kid on the block, some are at Mountain Home but the parent squadron is at Paya Lebar. (Spot 2, Robbert Snijders)
