General

Akinci, formerly known as Murted, is a military airfield north west of Ankara. The base is well known for its resident F-16 wing, 4nci AJU, and the Tusas Aerospace Industries (TAI) complex. Beware, plane spotting is neither understood nor appreciated in Turkey.

Layout

Akinci has a single runway 03/21. Both the north and south ends of the runway are surrounded by shelter areas. The TAI facilities can be found in the north eastern corner of the airfield.

Getting There

The airfield is located west of Ankara, just right off the Istanbul-Ankara O-4 highway, roughly between Kazan and Sincan. Unfortunately, there is no highway exit in its vicinity. Instead, continue towards Sincan and take the Yenikent and Ayas exit which will become road D-140 just before you reach Yenikent. This road leads south of the airfield.

Around the Airport

1Approach 03

Driving on the curvy D-140, turn right in the village of Yenikent at the signpost to 4 AJU, which is just past the bridge where the D-140 crosses the river. Follow this road for about five kilometers until you see the base. Find a spot on the small roads on either side of the main road to view the aircraft on finals for runway 03. As the main road leads to a gate, beware of military traffic.

2Southern shelter areas & preserved aircraft

Continue on the same road towards the base perimeter to perform a hit and run on the aircraft parked in the southern shelter areas, which are clearly visible. Do not forget to pole off the preserved aircraft just inside the gate.

3Approach 21

To reach the northern approach, continue on the D-140, which will become a country road after leaving Yenikent. Simply try to make a large loop around the base, by turning right at the dirt road to Ilyakut and on, to Fethiye. As a shooting range is situated between this road and the base, you might want to watch some spectacle here, although the distance is considerable. In Fethiye, turn right on the paved road, which leads past the 21 threshold. Park your car on the side of the road, where the hills make you just invisible from the watch towers. From here you can easily photograph the aircraft on finals for runway 21.

4TAI

Follow the road towards the highway and turn right towards the TAI facilities. You are permitted to drive trough the housing area, from where you might obtain some interesting views as well.
