General

Eskisehir is a military airfield just east of the town with the same name and is not to be mixed up with Eskisehir-Anadolu airport, which is north of the town. The base is home to a wing operating the attractive F-4E Phantom and also houses a huge maintenance centre. Beware, plane spotting is neither understood, nor appreciated in Turkey.

Layout

Shelter areas can be found both north and south of the 09/27 runway. The maintenance facilities are located in the south west corner of the airfield, as is the main gate.

Getting There

Coming from Istanbul or from the town center, continue on the D200/E-90 to Sivrihisar and Ankara. The air base can be found on your left in the outskirts of the town.

Around the Airport

1South side approach 09

From the elevated D200 road some views of the western part of the airfield can be obtained. The D200 exitroad just south of 09 threshold is a great place to watch the activities, but you are quite visible here from the gate and from the base. Just a quick stop to view the preserved aircraft at the gate is probably the best thing to do.

2North side approach 09

Coming from spot one, you have to head back to the town as there's no railway crossing. Take the first left after passing the railway bridge and backtrack to the railroad. From the road parallel to the railway you will be able to watch the aircraft landing at runway 09. But again, you are quite visible from the base, so its not a spot to spend your day...

3North eastern shelter area

Following the rail road line along the base fence, you will find the north eastern shelter area pretty close to the fence. This area houses 113 filo and usually you will see some RF-4Es being parked outside, even in the weekend.

4South side approach 27

Probably the safest spot to practise your hobby at Eskisehir, if it was not for the nosy locals... Coming from spot 3, cross the railway and head back towards the base' fence. After passing the threshold and crossing the creek, turn right and find yourself a quiet spot. Views of aircraft on finals for runway 27 are quite good.

5Local park

There's no perfect spot to spot when runway 09 is in use. One of your options is the local park just a few blocks away from the railway and the D200. Enjoy your picknick and meanwhile, keep an eye on the approach, although the fighters are pretty high here to read off.

6Under the bridge

You might want to alternate between spots 1, 5 and 6 a couple of times during your stay, when runway 09 is in use. Park your car under the bridge on its west side, out of sight from the base and try to do your thing.
