General

Konya is a large airbase in southern Turkey and is probably best known for the Turkish Stars aerial demonstration team and for hosting Anatolian Eagle exercises several times a year. Furthermore, the base houses fighter conversion squadrons and the sole Turkish AEW-unit. The base provides some challenges for the aircraft spotter, due to its sheer size and barren environment, although in recent years, construction work in the vicinity of the base has improved the situation somewhat. Beware, plane spotting is neither understood nor appreciated in Turkey.

Layout

Konya has a dual north south runway, one of which was added recently. To the north west the new civil terminal can be found. Further south is a huge platform, a shelter area can be found in the south east corner, from where F-5s are operating. On the opposite side of the runway, the combined F-4/F-16 squadron can be found. The AEW-squadron can be found half way to the west of the runways. Further north, the Turkish Stars are located as is the F-5 lead-in fighter training squadron on the famously S-shaped apron, which is also used during Anatolian Eagle exercises.

Getting There

The airfield can be found about 10kms north of Konya's town centre, along the road to Ankara.

Around the Airport

1Civil terminal

Konya's civil terminal opened in 2005. The entrance and exit road as well as the far corners of the parking lot in front of it, provide good views of the civil apron. Unfortunately, you have the pass a guarded gate to get access to the civil terminal, so make sure you have a reason to be there ready upon entering...

2Approach 19

A new road has been constructed along the northern fence of the base in recent years, providing an excuse to be there in the first place. From this road a few dirty side tracks can be taken, from where shots of aircraft on approach to both runway 19s can be obtained. Photography is possible for most of the day.

3Approach 01 - east side

Approach 01 is fairly open, but it will be hard to practice your hobby here without being noticed. A good option is the unfinished apartment building just south of the D300/D715 intersection. The building has reportedly been under construction for over ten years. Park your car at the restaurant next to it and try to get on to the premises. No elevators are installed so you have to climb your way up to the stairs. Make sure you are not spotted from the road whilst reading or photographing the aircraft on finals for runway 01. Photography is best in the morning.

4Approach 01 - west side

The west side of the southern approach can be reached as well. Heading west on road D300, take a right at Ebumusium Sk and turn right again at Ozden Cd. The area is very open but construction works might give you a reason to be here an do your thing. Photography is best in the late afternoon it seems.
